The Junkyard Cafe, Connaught Place

Umang Tewari has numerous ideas and concepts up his sleeve. He started with OTB (Out of the Box) and went on to open some great concept bars in the City- The Vault Cafe, Raas, ForkYou, Skooter, etc. Each of his restaurants offer multi cuisine menus and quirky drinks. His latest restaurant- The Junkyard Cafe uses yet another brilliant concept - making the best from waste.

The Junkyard Cafe is spread over 13,000 sq feet and derives inspiration from an actual junkyard. Unlike the usual dingy and low lit cafes/restaurants in the vicinity, Junkyard cafe with its high ceilings, open spaces and colourful & innovative interiors is a breath of fresh air. The huge terrace overlooking Connought place is just one of its scenic add ons. The ambience is bright and welcoming and the decor is extremely inventive.

We were invited to The Junkyard Cafe for a bloggers meet to try out the food and drinks at this new and unconventional cafe.

The first thing that strikes you as soon as you are seated is the quirky interiors - the sofas made of mother boards, Car bonnets, a Monalisa paining made entirely of Junk, a transformer figure in one corner, a dinosaur made from junk, the robot from ET (again made from junk), pillars made up of drawers and tyres, the bar table mounted upon a line of barrels, a map made of number plates and a lot more. One part of the roof is made up entirely of bottles. We were definitely in awe of the beautiful interiors made of recycled items. One look at the menu and we knew that this would be equally innovative. The menu is great for people on a diet. One section of the menu tells you how many calories are there in each dish that you order. The chef told us that they do not let food be wasted and try and minimise wastage by using the same ingredients in many dishes so that it is not wasted. Great concept!

Junkyard offers some very fresh and inventive cocktails. Even the nomenclature of the cocktails is innovative. We began our afternoon with the Bourbon Wreckage Fluid. The cocktail made of  orange juice, cinnamon, corn juice and bourbon was light and flavourful.

The Graveyard cocktail that we tried next was made of Vodka, white rum, green melon, kaffir lime and was topped with lemonade. It was served in an interesting skull shaped container.

We then went on to try the Edison bulb#2. The drink which was made of Gin, Lavender, lemon grass, lime juice was served on in a glass smoking with Nitrogen ice and was slightly sour and bitter at the same time.

For the calories conscious, the Junkyard cafe offers fresh fruit concoctions, iced tea and coffee.
In the meanwhile, the starters had started coming in. We tried the Bhatti ka murg, the veg salad, Falafal with hummus, Cold mezze platter, Amritsari fish tikka , Nachos, Cottage cheese fingers, paneer tikka, Kabuli badam seekh kebab and Spicy onion rings.

Falafal with hummus

Veg salad

Amritsari fish tikka

Bhatti ka murg

Cold mezze platter
The cold mezze platter had pita stuffed with cheese which added a new twist to the dish. Served with 6/8 different side dips, the platter was extremely flavourful .

Spicy onion rings
The Onion rings were coated with a layer of Aloo Bhujiya and then deep fried. The aloo bhoojiya added the spice to the onion rings and also a familiar taste but made the batter too heavy & dense and so in the process, the taste of the onion itself was lost.

Paneer Tikka

Kabuli badam seekh kebab

The mildly spicy and delectable Kabuli badam seekh kebab was Gautams favourite.

Cottage cheese fingers

Nachos

Our favourites were the Amritsari fish tikka ,Paneer tikka, Kabuli badam seekh kebab & cottage cheese fingers.

The tandoor items- Amritsari fish tikka ,Paneer tikka and the Murg tikka were well marinated and cooked to perfection. The Paneer was wonderfully moist, soft and was delicious.

By now, the bloggers table was over crowded with the drinks and food and the bloggers seemed quite happy with the range of food and drinks being served.
Getting on to the main course, we tried the Veg sushi platter, the non veg sushi platter, Chello kebab, Junkyard special Veg burger, 5 spice chicken and the Shammi Burger.

My favourite was the 5 spice chicken tossed with tomatoes and onions served on pita bread with Hummus on the side.

The sushi was well made- both veg and non veg.

The Chello kebabs were juicy and tender but were not seasoned well and were not as good as the original. Both the burgers- The Shammi burger and the Junkyard special Veg burger were delicious.

For dessert, we had the creamy and tasty Oreo cheesecake and the Chocolate cheesecake.

The Junkyard Cafe is the perfect place for a fun filled evening over great food and drinks. The outdoor seating is beautifully lit up in the evening and serves as the perfect place to catch up with friends and family during winters.
