The Salad and Mocktail festival at Dao, GK1
Dao joins hands in making this world a healthier place with its variety of Thai Salads offerings in the ongoing 'Salad Boat' festival from 15th June-16th July.
As the name suggests, it's all about several exotic Thai salads specially crafted by masterchef Anil Kumar which are meant to submerge your palate in the exclusivity of the original taste and texture of Thai Salads.
Freshness and lightness of Thai cuisine has made it a global favorite. Drawing on Thailand's traditional craftsmanship in wood, Dao uses the material to create both an upscale yet unpretentious atmosphere.
Dao's regular menu offers a wide range of soups, salads, appetizers, and main courses with options of curries, seafood and meats along with stir-fry menu to accompaniments of noodles and rice and finally desserts and beverage options.
I ordered the mocktails to start with - Kiwi and Mint mocktail and the Orange and Mint Virgin Mojito. The Kiwi and Mint mocktail was basically kiwi and mint crushed together and topped up with lime juice and soda. The flavours went together really well and the drink was refreshing.
The Orange and Mint Virgin Mojito was a mixture of orange juice, fresh mint, orange slices and brown sugar.
The first salad we tried was the Yam Som O Salad which is Pomelo fruit tossed in sweet and sour dressing garnished with fried onion. The fruit was the hero of the salad and the salad itself was well prepared but the dressing was too sweet for my liking and there were not enough chillies. The Cashews and fried onions which were used to garnish the salad added a great texture to the salad. However, the salad was missing the coconut flakes/coconut milk which is traditionally used in Yam Som O.
The next salad we tried was the Yam Woon Sen which is a glass noodle salad in a spicy tangy dressing with Chicken. The overall salad was quite nice but it lacked the tanginess and was not very well seasoned.
Laab Kai which is crumbled chicken tossed with roasted crushed rice, mint, thai spices and lime juice is usually my favourite Thai salad and it looked fresh and flavourful. But it had too much fish sauce which sort of killed the aroma and overpowered the flavours.
Yam Phak Ruam Mit Krob which is exotic crispy vegetable salad tossed in a hot, sweet & sour dressing was the salad of the day. The veggies were crunchy, the seasoning was spot on and the dressing was lovely and flavourful.
The Som Tom which is young raw papaya tossed with green beans, cherry tomatoes and crushed peanuts in a fiery Thai dressing was not upto the mark. The papaya was limp and soggy instead of being crunchy and firm which in turn let down the rest of the ingredients of the salad. But overall, it was a decent salad.
Nam Tok Ped which is crispy duck tossed in roasted rice sauce was delicious. The duck was cooked very well, you could taste the fresh ingredients and the seasoning was just right.
Apart from the salads, we also ordered the Jeaw Koong which is a Thai omelette with minced prawns. I think we were served the wrong dish as the omelette we had did not contain any prawns whatsoever. The omelette on its own was quite nice and delicious but we really missed the prawns.
Overall, it was an average experience as the dishes were not upto the mark.
The 'Salad Boat' festival is on from 15th June-16th July so you guys should visit and tell me what you think!
Happy eating!
